Meeting and Technical Seminar:

“Designing with Structural Glass”

Steven C. Ball, SE, LEED AP

Structural engineers commonly design structures using steel, wood, masonry, or concrete. There are numerous design references and codes for using those building materials. There are many unique, creative, and bold structures in the United States that use glass to support occupant and environmental loads. Unfortunately, limited U.S. design resources and standards are available to the designer for structural glass. This presentation will provide information regarding the manufacture of glass, the material properties of glass, and will provide guidance on designing glass structures for compliance with U.S. standards. Photos of some glass structures will be presented.

With over 30 years as a Structural Engineer, Steven Ball offers clients a unique engineering skillset. His time at a multidiscipline engineering firm combined with several years at JAMA has provided him the uncommon perspective of the architectural, mechanical, and civil side of structural design and how collaboration among disciplines is paramount for the successful completion of complex projects. Steve’s experience spans projects across the nation, and includes expertise with airports, convention centers, sports facilities, museums, cable structures, glass structures, and high-rise buildings.
